GTG Training is delighted to announce its recent approval as a supplier for the new Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) course. The Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT), who acts on behalf of The Driving Standards Agency (DSA), confirmed the approval earlier this month, allowing GTG in Glasgow and Edinburgh to begin accepting candidates for its Drivers CPC course.
A new qualification for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers, the Driver CPC is part of the EU Directive 2003/59 which requires such drivers to have completed the course in addition to their vocational driving licence. This directive has been in force since 10th September 2008 for bus and coach drivers with lorry drivers included from 10th September 2009.
New drivers will need to pass the Driver CPC theory and practical tests in addition to the licence acquisition theory and practical tests if they intend to drive professionally. Drivers having held a licence (C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE and D1E) prior to these dates will not be required to take the initial qualification, however both new and existing drivers will be required to complete 35 hours periodic training every five years, which can be untaken at the tailor made GTG facilities in South Street, Glasgow and Bankhead Drive, Edinburgh.
The main aim behind the Driver CPC is to improve road safety. With many accidents involving these vehicles ending in a fatality, this course aims to provide better quality drivers and bring an improved professional and positive image to the associated industries. It aims to not only improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of LGV and PCV drivers when they first start, but also ensures those skills are maintained and developed throughout the driver's career.
GTG Training has state of the art facilities and highly qualified, experienced staff to ensure that candidates successfully complete both the initial qualification and the periodic training. Such change in the law can be confusing; GTG is here to ensure a smooth transition takes place.
