Reduce your Driving Costs at GTG Training

GTG's SAFED Course could save the UK over £871 million per Year*

With the idea of national road pricing returning to the political agenda, which would see companies charged for every mile their drivers cover, GTG Training is urging companies to consider the Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) training course for their drivers, which can save UK businesses as a whole, £871 million per annum.

Although the current Government has ruled out the introduction of road pricing at least until the next Parliament, a highly influential group of scientists and advisors, who have had previous carbon reduction recommendations adopted by Parliament, have urged the Government to ‘seriously consider road pricing'.

The SAFED driving course offered at GTG Training in Glasgow and Edinburgh is a high quality, essential, driver development course which aims to improve miles per gallon (MPG) on average by 10.2%.

This one-day, instructor led course involves both classroom and on-the-road tuition and teaches a variety of driving techniques including better use of gears, keeping correct distances to avoid hard braking, and an overall awareness of fuel economy and road layout.

Billy Hammond, transport training manager at GTG Training comments, "This course has had incredible results with regards to fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. According to Government Statistics, there are approximately 448,000 HGV drivers in the UK. If each driver was to enrol on the SAFED course , we would see 829 million litre reduction in fuel usage. This is an astounding amount and I can only encourage more companies and drivers to follow suit. The financial and environmental savings are invaluable."

Safer driving results in:

  • Less injuries and fatalities on the roads
  • Less accident damage to vehicles
  • Less unproductive downtime for vehicle repair
  • The potential for reduced insurance premiums

Fuel efficient driving results in:

  • Lower costs
  • Improved profit margins
  • Reduced emissions
  • Improved environmental performance

Van, HGV, LGV and company car users are likely to be recommended to take the SAFED course first should the above mentioned recommendations be acted upon, with 3.9 million drivers needing to be taught and begin practicing eco-driving techniques within 10 years.

The SAFED training course at GTG Training has also been acknowledged as being suitable to become an approved course for Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) .

*This figure is calculated using the average MPG improvement figure of 10.2% per driver, resulting in an average saving of 1852.32 litres per person. Using the average cost of diesel (£1.05 per litre), this figure can be translated into a saving of £1944.93 per driver. There are approximately 448,000 HGV company drivers in the UK, which means a total saving of £871,331,328 can be made if each driver is enrolled on the SAFED course.
