An essential new taxi and private hire driver course is coming to GTG
In 2020, all taxi drivers in Glasgow will need the Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver course – and it’s available at GTG.
If you’re a taxi or private hire driver in Glasgow, or you’d like to get your licence, you’ll need to be aware of big changes to the taxi industry coming in 2020. Glasgow City Council will be the second Scottish local authority to require that drivers complete a professional qualification in order to apply for or renew their licence.
What is the new taxi training course?
The SQA-accredited Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver course comprises nine mandatory units and replaces the current Customer Care course. You’ll cover subjects like how to safely transport customers in wheelchairs, health and safety, and planning routes and fares.
Do I need to complete the taxi and private hire training?
If you want to become a taxi or private hire driver after 1 st January 2020, you’ll have to complete this course before you apply for your licence. Current licence holders who will be renewing their credentials after 1 st April 2020 will also need to take the course before submitting their application.
How long does the Glasgow taxi and private hire course last?
Around 150 hours of study are needed to pass this course, which can be done through classroom teaching at our Glasgow training centre, or by distance e-learning. If you complete the course at our centre, you’ll need to attend for nine days. Whether you complete the course online, or in the classroom, you’ll need to sit the test for each unit at GTG.
Do I need any experience to take the new taxi training course?
You don’t need any qualifications or previous taxi-driving experience to take this course. However, you’ll need to have a good understanding of the English language. You’ll also need to be over 18, and have held your driving licence for at least one year.
If you earn less than £22,000 per year then you may be eligible for £200 of funding with an Individual Training Account (ITA). More information can be found at My World of Work .
GTG Glasgow’s expert instructors have more than 30 years’ experience in driver training, to guide you towards this new qualification.
