The Plant Operations Construction Level 2 qualification demonstrates that employees have the skills and knowledge required to obtain their competent operators card.
Who does it apply to?
Any candidates who wish to progress from trained operator to competent operator must achieve this SVQ.
About the programme
Four units must be achieved to complete the qualification, as well as core skills and assessments on two items of plant equipment.
Experienced candidates will normally complete the award within six months,, otherwise it will take 12 months.
The SVQ assessments will be carried out on-site at the company’s premises over approximately four visits, each lasting around 2-3 hours.

- Conforming to productive work practices
- Preparing plant or machinery for operational performance
- Operating plant or machinery to lift and transfer loads
Core skills required:
- Problem solving
- Working with others
- Information Technology
IT is the only core skill which must be separately assessed
How much does it cost?
The employers’ contribution for this Modern Apprenticeship will be £200, payable to GTG Training.
For companies that pay into the grant levy fund, the cost of the SVQ may be claimed from their CITB grant levy on completion.
The Modern Apprenticeship is a cost-effective way to fund the required SVQ, although the MA funding is only available for operators who have never completed an SVQ. If the operator already holds a blue card for another item on plant, we cannot access MA funding.
For operators who are not eligible for funding, GTG can still complete the required SVQ as a standalone qualification at a cost of £650+VAT.
