How Driver CPC training works

All drivers must complete at least 35 hours of Driver Certificate of Professional Competence training every five years on a continuous basis. This is what’s known as periodic training.

Periodic DCPC training is typically split into five courses that run for seven hours at a time, so on average drivers receive training once a year, but timing can be based on individual or company requirements.

Each following five-year period begins from the expiry date of a driver’s current DCPC qualification, and not from the date on which they reached the 35-hour minimum training requirement.

Drivers of LGV vehicles only need to do one set of periodic training every five years. You can check your CPC course history through the DVSA.

New drivers

New drivers must pass an initial Driver CPC qualification before driving professionally – the CPC is made up of modules 2 and 4. Once complete, you'll need to keep this up to date through periodic training courses.

The initial qualification is split into four parts:

  • Theory test: split into multiple choice and hazard perception
  • Case studies: a series of seven studies based on real-life situations
  • Practical test: testing your driving ability
  • Vehicle safety demonstration: learning how to keep vehicles safe and secure
