GTG Training’s Employability programme can help you on the path to a fruitful career. Working in partnership with local councils across Scotland, the programme offers learners the chance to gain essential skills and first-hand experience, as well as an official licence relevant to the trade.

From LGV and PCV driver training to warehouse and storage programmes, there’s a variety to choose from – and if you meet the eligibility criteria, you’ll come out with a licence and a range of new career options.

What’s more, GTG works closely with a range of major employers who are often recruiting, which means learners can be lined up for interviews as soon as they complete their training.

With many success stories to come out of the programme, we spoke to Andrew Allan about his experience. Unemployed at the start of 2022, Andrew was directed to the LGV Driver Training programme by a work coach at the job centre, and began his GTG course in February.

Throughout the time he spent at GTG working towards his Category C licence, Andrew enjoyed every aspect of the experience, citing GTG’s professionalism and their encouraging trainers as huge positives.

He said: "My trainer, Allan, was so helpful and friendly. He communicated everything by breaking it down so that it was clear what was expected of me. At the start, I didn't feel very confident, but Allan was so encouraging and believed in me which gave me the confidence boost that I needed."

"The staff are a real credit to GTG! Everyone was professional, friendly, and easy to approach, which helped put me at ease throughout my learning journey."

GTG’s Driver Training programmes are continually assessed by awarding bodies, and they’re led by experienced instructors who all hold nationally recognised qualifications awarded by the NVDIR (National Vocational Driving Instructor Register) and the RTITB (Road Transport Industry Training Board).

In order to achieve his Category C licence, Andrew completed a theory test, a few days of practical training at GTG and finally his practical test. He believes his biggest achievement was passing the practical test on his first attempt.

He said: "I passed my test the first time and this is solely down to the training. Allan always gave us clear instructions and encouraged us to ask questions. I also found learning with another person helpful because we could learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses. Learning together also gave me time to assess my progress, which allowed me to identify areas for improvement."

The Driver Training programme and Category C licence is a great entry point to the Transport & Logistics industry, giving learners the skills required to operate heavy goods vehicles that weigh over 3.5 tonnes, while also opening up various job opportunities. With thousands of deliveries being made across the UK every day, it’s the most popular HGV licence in the country. Plus, there’s always the option of boosting your earning capacity even further with other specialist driving courses.

With more career options now available to him thanks to the training programme, Andrew is currently looking at bin driver opportunities within Renfrewshire Council. Looking to the future, he said: "Through the Driver Training Programme, I've learned so much which I feel has set me up for success and has opened up so many doors since obtaining my licence.
